HURRICANE ATLAS

Aptly named “Hurricane Alley,” this is the area stretching from North Africa to the Gulf Coast of the U.S., where warm waters provide the right ingredients for monster storms. Florida is the most hurricane-prone place in the U.S. Grand Cayman Island is affected by hurricanes most frequently.

Hurricanes on the Pacific coast of the U.S. and Mexico are rare, but in 1939, a hurricane hit Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. In 1959, a hurricane hit Mexico’s Pacific Coast, killing two thousand people.

Not officially hurricanes (because they’re not tropical in origin), the “gales” of the North Atlantic can carry winds of up to 120 miles per hour. The gale of 1703 destroyed fifteen warships off the coast of Bristol, England, killing 1,500 seamen. A storm known as “The Big Wind” hit County Galway, Ireland, in 1839, causing hundreds of shipwrecks.
